Melbourne Stadium Stomp

Get set for the stair climbing event of EPIC proportions!!

Stadium Stomp uses the stairs within some of the largest sporting stadiums in the country to test willing participants in the ultimate stair climbing challenge.

And for the fourth consecutive year Australia’s largest sporting stadium, the MCG, will host Stadium Stomp MCG on Sunday 26 June, 2016 making this Stadium Stomp the largest of its kind in the country. The event is in place to support the Leukaemia Foundation , by encouraging the participants to fundraise for the foundation or a charity close to their heart, as a way of making every step count

Stadium Stomp MCG covers over 7,300 stairs up and down the MCG’s grandstands.

For participants it provides a unique fitness challenge which event organiser Ben King from King Performance stresses is not a race but a test of stamina and concentration that’s open to all fitness levels.

How it works

Participants will climb up, down and around the bays of the MCG on a course set to music that is expected to take anywhere from 40-120 minutes to complete depending on fitness levels.

The full course will comprise of a lap of level one and a lap of level four before running a full lap of the oval to finish. There is also a half course option – a lap of level one and the lap of the oval.

“We want everyone to experience our event,” says Marketing Manager, Susie King.

“The half course allows for a taste of Stadium Stomp MCG without the daunting prospect of climbing 7,300 stairs. Our half course is a very do-able 1942 stairs.”

Staggered start times begin from 8am to 1pm to ensure the stairs don’t become congested.

Anyone 12 years and older can enter as a team or individual and participants can choose their preferred start time when registering.

Spectators can view the event free of charge via the designated spectator viewing area accessible via Gate 1. In this way family and friends can watch and support the participants as they stomp around the MCG grandstands.

Why do it?

There aren’t many people in Melbourne who haven’t been to the MCG to watch a game and cheered from the stands. Now they can experience the MCG in a unique way and become an active participant rather than the traditional spectator.

If you need a fitness reason, stair climbing is an excellent way to build cardiorespiratory endurance and lower-body muscular endurance and strength.

Climbing a flight of stairs (ten steps) is the equivalent calorie burn of taking 38 steps on level ground, so it’s almost four times as beneficial to take the stairs.
